Oxfam Trailwalker 2018 update

Typhoon Mangkhut damaged parts of the MacLehose Trail and left countless fallen trees in its wake. Thanks to the great efforts of the AFCD and volunteers though, most trails are clear now. With several trails still blocked or damaged, we have kept in contact with the AFCD, other departments and organisations to stay up to date about the latest situation. So far, we are optimistic about the progress and will make further announcements at the end of October/early November. Please continue training and preparing for the Oxfam Trailwalker (OTW) with your support teams.

Thank you all once again for your patience, understanding and support. We will do our very best to ensure the event is held as planned.

Support team tips – Useful information for support teams (NEW)

A good support team can make a huge difference in an event like the OTW. Leaders of Support teams are recommended to read the ‘Support Team Tips’ leaflet. It provides essential details on how to organise a great support team from start to finish and what they can do to best help their teams during the 48-hour challenge. Dustykid, who has taken part in the OTW before, kindly designed this leaflet for us!

OTW 2018 – Public transportation

The number of support team members and vehicles have been increasing in recent years, so we strongly urge support teams to avoid driving to checkpoints. Instead, support team members are highly encouraged to make use of Oxfam’s shuttle bus service. Please take a look at shuttle services below and share this information with your support teams!

Note: Please make sure the bus is going to the correct destination before boarding. Drop-off points include:  Start Point (paid service) / Checkpoint 2 / Checkpoint 8 / Finish Point.

 A. Paid Shuttle bus to OTW 2018 Start Point – Pak Tam Chung (NEW)

The morning of the first day of the OTW often sees traffic jams, especially in areas like Hang Hau and Choi Hung. Please pay attention to the bus schedule when purchasing tickets and be sure that they match the start time of your team.

Remark: For more information about teams’ registration and start times, please refer to P.7 of the information booklet: http://www.oxfamtrailwalker.org.hk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/OTW18-Booklet_E-Final-s-Event-Info.pdf

B. Checkpoint 2 (Pak Tam Au) shuttle bus

Checkpoint 2 is located in an AFCD restricted area; all vehicles without a Country Park Permit cannot access it. Parking and loading/unloading is also NOT allowed around the checkpoint even for vehicles carrying a Country Park Permit.  Support teams can reach Checkpoint 2 by taking public transport or the free shuttle bus provided by Oxfam.

Shuttle bus route:
Between the barrier at Pak Tam Chung and Checkpoint 2 (Pak Tam Au)
12:00 – 22:00, 16 November (every 40 to 60 minutes)

C. Closure of carpark at Checkpoint 3 (Kei Ling Ha) during event

Parking and loading/unloading is NOT allowed around the entrance of Checkpoint 3. Shui Long Wo carpark (next to CP3) will also be closed from 22:00 on 15 November to 06:00 on 17 November. Vehicles are prohibited from waiting or parking there; vehicles will only be able to drop off passengers or unload goods there. Police will enforce traffic control along Chuk Yeung Road (between Shan Liu and Wong Chuk Yeung) from 13:00 on 16 November to 06:00 on 17 November.

D. Parking strictly forbidden at Shatin Pass during event

Shatin Pass Road is a popular place for support teams to provide materials and encouragement to teams during the event. However, this has created heavy traffic in the area and parking problems, which has affected walkers and could prevent medical staff from accessing the area should an emergency arise.

As such, traffic will be controlled near MacLehose Trail Distance Post M101, and the intersection of Kwun Ping Road and Shatin Pass Road from 15 to 17 November. Parking will also be strictly forbidden during this period; passengers and goods will only be allowed to be dropped off or picked up in a designated zone. Support teams are strongly advised NOT to drive to the aforementioned area.

E. Checkpoint 6 (Smugglers Ridge Rifle Range): Temporary traffic control

Golden Hill Road (Kam Shan Road) will be temporarily closed during the OTW. Please note that unauthorised vehicles (except the Organiser’s vehicles), including mountain bikes, will not be allowed to enter Golden Hill Road.  Support teams are strongly advised to take public transport to Checkpoint 6 instead of driving.

Public transport to Checkpoint 6:
Bus No. 72 / 81 (get off at Shek Lei Pui Reservoir on Tai Po Road)

F. Checkpoint 8 (Tai Mo Shan) shuttle bus

Tai Mo Shan Road will be temporarily closed during the OTW. Please note that unauthorised vehicles (except the Organiser’s vehicles), including mountain bikes and taxies, will not be allowed to enter. Since no support team vehicles will be able to access Tai Mo Shan Road (and thus the Rotary Club Car Park), Oxfam will provide a free shuttle running from Tsuen Wan MTR Station to the Checkpoint 8 support area. Support teams are strongly advised to take public transport to Checkpoint 8 instead of driving.

Shuttle bus details:
Route: Tsuen Wan MTR Station (Exit B2, Tsuen Fung Centre Shopping Arcade) to Checkpoint 8
Schedule: 16:00, 16 November – 00:00, 17 November (every 40 minutes)

G. Finish Point (Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club Tai Tong Holiday Camp) shuttle bus

Accommodation at Finish Point

Some of the rooms at the Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club Tai Tong Holiday Camp (Finish Point) will be available for rent for OTW 2018’s registered teams, their support teams and friends. Due to the limited supply of rooms, interested teams should fill in the accommodation application form and return it to Oxfam on or before 18:00 on 25 October (Hong Kong Time) by email or fax. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that we do not accept applications by post.

Please note that some of the rooms are located inside the Leadership Training Base Building, which is far from the Finish Hall – it is roughly a 10-15 min walk (this will probably take longer for those who just finished the 100 km!). Make sure you read all the rules and terms on the application form before submitting the application. For the location of the rooms, please refer to the application form. Please email otwinfo@oxfam.org.hk for enquires.
