"Oxfam Trailwalker", formerly called "Trailwalker", was an endurance training exercise for soldiers. In 1986, Oxfam Hong Kong was invited to co-organise the event and in the same year the event was open to the public. Along with the retreat of Gurkhas in 1997, Oxfam Hong Kong took over the event. Through the years, Oxfam Trailwalker has become one of the largest fundrasing sports events in Hong Kong.

 

2008

  • 100km Trailwalking 100% Against Poverty” was the slogan this year, a reminder that we are not only walking the trail for ourselves, but to help people help themselves to get out of poverty.
  • This year we suffered the most challenging weather: from 33c in the first day afternoon to 10c in the second day night! Over 3,089 people (80% of all participants) finished the trail.
  • Oxfam Trailwalker 2008 raised over HK$22 million
  • A special team of four Sichuan earthquake survivors and volunteers: Beyond 512 was invited to the event, together with Ms Yu Chui Yee, medal winner of the 2008 Paralympics wheelchair fencing event, Mr Bernard Chan, Chairman of Oxfam Trailwalker Advisory Committee, and Mr Leung Chun Ying, the Executive Council to promote the core spirit of Oxfam Trailwalker - Courage, determination and perseverance.
  •  G4S” was the first team across the finish line in 11 hours 52 minutes (record-breaking finish time).
  • 8 New Records:
    • Super Trailwalker, Male team, General Corporation: G4S - 11 hr 52 min
    • Finance team: Convoy Cosmoboys - 13 hr 57 min
    • Trailwalker, Tourism team : PowerBar Salomon - 13 hr 52 min
    • Social Service team: Intertouch - Friends of the Samaritans – 18 hr 27 min
    • Health Care team: Hang Hang – 15 hr 39 min
  • Carolyn Kng was suffering from intense back pain and unfit to participate in strenuous exercise. However, with great determination, she trained rigorously for around one year, and was finally able to finish the 100km trail in 17 hours with her team in 2008. She was the female team champion and the winner of State Street Overcoming the Odds Award 2008.
  • The is the last year with Perowne Barracks, Tuen Mun as the Finish Point
  • Oxfam Trailwalker was held in 7 cities around the world: New Zealand, Melbourne, Sydney, Japan, England, Belgium and Hong Kong.

 

2007

  • “Exhausting, Painful…but it’s worth it!” was the slogan this year
  • Over 3,200 people (87% of all participants) finished the trail
  • Oxfam Trailwalker 2007 raised over HK$27 million
  • Three world-class athletes, Ms. Yu Chui Yee, Mr. So Wa Wai and Mr Nelson Yip, all competitors in the 2008 Paralympic Games, joined Ms. Betty Yue, Winner of State Street Overcoming the Odds Award 2005 and 2006, to form Team 0432 – a great inspiration for walkers as they faced the 100km trail. For over 20 years, Oxfam has supported the rights of people with disabilities through various development, advocacy and education programmes, and through Trailwalker, too.
  • The Closing Ceremony of Oxfam Trailwalker 2007 and the “300-day Countdown to the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games” was held jointly on the afternoon of 11 November.
  • The first Oxfam Trailwalker in Japan was held in May 2007 around Mount Fuji.
  • “Fire Services Team Beyond Limits” was the first team across the finish line, in 12 hours 24 minutes.
  • 3 New Records:

         Mixed Team: Sunhing Cosmoboys II -- 14 h 9 min

         Female Team: LGT Bank Team Green Women -- 14 h 11 min

         Veteran Team: The Ancient Mariners -- 15 h 24 min

2006

  • 25th anniversary of the event
  • Total number of participants since 1981 -- more than 50,000 people
  • Total donations to Oxfam Hong Kong – more than HK$220 million
  • The total distance walked since 1981 is equivalent to walking 100 times around Earth.
  • Cancer survivor Betty Yue finished the trail and won the State Street Overcoming the Odds Award for the second year in a row.
  • Oxfam Trailwalker 2006 raised over HK$26 million

 

2005

  • Mr Rafael Hui, Chief Secretary for Administration, officiated the Starting Ceremony.
  • The event started with a hot (maximum temperature 27.9°C) and humid (relative humidity 93%) weather. Still, over 80% of the participants completed the trail.
  • Securicor Team completed the 100 km MacLehose Trail in 12 hours 38 minutes and won the championship in three consecutive years!
  • Hong Kong Medical Association, which raised HK$1,016,187, was the Overall Fundraising Champion for the seventh time. 
  • An enthusiastic hiker, Ms Betty Yue Mei Fong has her health faltered, and then her mother passed away during her preparation for Oxfam Trailwalker.  Her promise to her late mother sustained: Betty had said she would try her best to complete the 100km.  She persevered and finished the trail in 30 hours 23 minutes and won the State Street Overcoming the Odds Award.

2004

  • The name of the event was changed from "Trailwalker" to "Oxfam Trailwalker" for standardisation of the event name and internationalisation of the event.
  • Along with the new name, a brand new logo was also introduced for the event.
  • Oxfam Trailwalker set many new records!
    • Record-breaking response - more than 2,300 applications which is more than 5 times the maximum quota!
    • Record-breaking finishing time - The Champion team Securicor Team completed the 100-km MacLehose Trail in 11 hours 57 minutes!
    • Record-breaking completion rate - 88% of participants (i.e. 3,266 individuals) completed the 100-km Trail!
    • Record-breaking amount raised - more than HKD 20 millions collected and hit the fundraising target!
  • Phoenix Satellite Television news presenter Tanya Liu also known as "Life Trailwalker" has flown from Beijing to HK to be the officiating guest of the event, and taken on the trail with the 4,000 participants.
  • During her stay in HK, Tanya has joined with Bernard Chan, Chairman of Oxfam Trailwalker Advisory Committee and Dr. York Chow, Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food in varied events to promote the core spirit of Oxfam Trailwalker - Endurance and caring to others.
  • Louisa Cheng Wan Lan who has undergone long and hard recover journey from colon cancer has completed the 100-km trail and won the State Street Overcoming the Odds Award.

2003

  • Despite the economic downturn and SARS outbreak, 924 teams raised over $18.4 million.
  • Hong Kong Medical Association, which raised HK$1,723,238, was the Overall Fundraising Champion for the sixth time.
  • Hong Kong Medical Association Team 073 won the Outstanding Fundraising Award by raising HK$644,025.28.
  • Described by the Daily Mail as "a hero for our times", Mr. Chris Moon officiated at the opening ceremony. Chris, who lost his right leg and arm when clearing landmines in Mozambique in 1995, has run in dozens of fundraising marathons. He also participated in the event and finished the 100-km trek with his team-mates in 28 hours 10 minutes. His endurance and incredible strength won him the "State Street Overcoming the Odds Award".
  • Securicor Team, the fastest team in Trailwalker's history, impressed everyone with a new record time of 12 hours 16 minutes.
  • Sunhing Cosmogirls completed the trail in 14 hours 48 minutes and set a new record for female teams.
  • 2,146 applications received, another record for Trailwalker.
  • From burning sun to heavy rain, Trailwalker experienced the most extreme weather.
  • Four start time: 9:00, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00
  • Quota increased to 980 teams.

2002

  • Actress Ms. Maggie Cheung and actor Mr. Tony Leung officiated the opening ceremony.
  • More than HK$18 millions was raised.
  • Set a highest finished rate (individual) - 86%
  • Hong Kong Medical Association raised $1,584,647.56 set a fundraising champion record.
  • Fastest male team - Montrail Team completed the course in 12 hours 47 minutes and won the champion in two consecutive years.
  • Fastest female team - Montrail Girls set a new record for female team at 15 hours 12 minutes.
  • State Street introduced the State Street Overcoming the Odds Award to honor an individual who has overcome many obstacles and difficulties to complete the walkathon.
  • Visually impaired walker Chung Chi Shing finished 100km MacLehose Trail and won the State Street Overcoming the Odds Award.
  • Totally 1978 applications received.

2001

  • Former China gymnast Sang Lan flew to Hong Kong from Beijing to officiate the opening ceremony .
  • More than HK$17 million was raised.
  • 85 percent finished the walk - a new record.
  • The Rotary Club of Kowloon North swept the Overall Fundraising Championship, raising a total of HK$1,370,000.
  • Champion team Montrail Protrek from the U.S. completed the course in 12 hours 52 minutes, breaking the official record set by the Gurkhas in 1993.
  • Sunhing Cosmoboys 3 completed the trail in 17 hours 21 minutes, breaking the official record of female teams and becoming the first female Super Trailwalker team.
  • Totally 1646 applications received.

2000

  • "Super Trailwalker", a new category of Trailwalker was introduced into Trailwalker 2000. Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa attended the Super Trailwalker reception to show support to the 18 qualifying teams. Twelve teams managed to finish within 18 hours and were awarded the Super Trailwalker certificates.
  • Mr. John Tower from State Street and renowned actress Ms Cecilia Yip officiated the start.
  • Over HK$16 million was raised
  • 918 teams participated.
  • About 200 walkers at Checkpoint seven were advised not to proceed due to the adverse weather condition after midnight, 12 November. The walkers and support teams were assisted to leave the checkpoint.
  • Application of Open Team Category had to go into lottery by computer. Totally 1250 applications received.

1999

  • State Street as a principle sponsor.
  • Quota increased from 760 teams to 900.
  • Three Start times: 10am, 1pm and 3pm.
  • A total of HK$14 million was raised.

1998

  • The 760-team quota was full in 15 minutes. The first person at the queue was already there at 8:00pm the night before the registration day.
  • 760 teams raised over HK$12 million despite the economic downturn - an all-time record.
  • Chief Secretary Mrs. Anson Chan and Mr Albert Chang officiated the Starting Ceremony.
  • 80% of the walkers finished the trail

1997

  • Singer Alan Tam and Gold medalist at the All China Games, Wong Kum Po, were Guests of Honour.
  • The 700-team quota was full within three hours. People queued up at 4am on the first day of registration.
  • Ex-Legco members Tik Chi-yuen, Lee Wing-tat, Roger K. H. Luk, Cheng Kar-foo and David Y. L. Chu teamed up to form "97 Through Train" and raised $199,700.
  • 720 teams raised over HK$11 million.
  • Oxfam Hong Kong published the 160-page full-colour pictorial Trailwalker, documenting the Trailwalker events from 1986 to 1996.

1996

  • Paralympic gold medallist Benny Cheung was Guest of Honour.
  • Registration was full in a fast 12 hours.
  • A sweet victory for the Gurkhas in their last Trailwalker, with a winning time of 13 hours 28 minutes.
  • 79% of the walkers finished the trail.
  • As the Gurkhas left the territory, Oxfam Hong Kong enlisted the support of many other community organizations who helped out in the great Trailwalker spirit of partnership.
  • 700 teams raised $10 million.

1995

  • Registration of 650 teams full in just six days.
  • The second time a civilian team is the champion: Carlingford Lombard Comets in 14 hours 26 minutes.
  • Taipan Team raised $2,243,000, breaking the $2 million team fundraising record set in 1990.
  • Raised $12,489,000.

1994

  • Actress Cherry Chung was Guest of Honour.
  • Registration was full in three weeks.
  • A team of four veterinarians from the then Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals each brought a dog to walk the trail.
  • Raised $10,455,000.

1993

  • Lau Chung Wai, a member of the Trailwalker-supported Hong Kong Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, was Guest of Honour. He also walked the trail.
  • Registration of 600 teams was full in six weeks.
  • The 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles "B" Team broke the 1990 record by three minutes and finished the trail in 13 hours 18 minutes.
  • Each of the 15 walkers in the Taipans Team donated $100,000.
    Raised $10,300,000.

1992

  • Singer Sally Yeh supported the event as Guest of Honour.
  • Raised $7,500,000.
  • Trailwalker Centre in Kwai Chung opened to provide training and counseling services for mentally handicapped adults.

1991

  • Actor Chow Yun Fat joined as Guest of Honour.
  • Hong Kong Telecom installed cables along the trail - in the past, The Gurkhas had provided communications with VHF radios.
  • 1,344 walkers, or 70% of participants, finished the trail.
    Raised $7,200,000.

1990

  • Singer Alan Tam was Guest of Honour.
  • 'Million Team' raised $2,000,000.
  • Raised $6,000,000.

1989

  • Celebrity Lydia Shum was Guest of Honour.
  • 350 teams: 75 Gurkha, 230 civilian - the first year with more civilian teams than military.
  • Raised $2,200,000
  • $86,000 from Trailwalker 88' would purchase special light-weight wheelchairs for athletes with disabilities

 

1988

  • Jackie Chan joined Trailwalker as Guest of Honour.
  • Lord Wilson helicoptered in and greeted walkers along the trail.
  • 230 teams raised HK$1,200,000.

1987

  • The then Governor Wilson was Guest of Honour.
  • The organisers set up two Starts - one daytime, one in the evening.
  • 724 walkers in 181 teams: 130 Gurkha, 51 civilian.
  • Raised $840,000.

1986

  • The first year Trailwalker was opened to the public, a non-military team won!
  • Oxfam Hong Kong began to co-organise the event, and to receive 1/3 of the donations. The other two-thirds went to the Gurkha Welfare Trust and to organizations which help people with disabilities in Hong Kong.
  • HongkongBank joined as sponsor, covering all administrative costs. 100 teams, 69 Gurkha and 31 civilian, braved near-typhoon conditions at midnight.
  • Raised $208,000.

1985

  • The Gurkhas invited five non-military teams to join Trailwalker.
  • 55 teams raised $98,000.

1984

  • The total raised was disappointingly less than in 1983.

1983

  • Sgt. Debendraraj Limbu said there were 19 checkpoints in 1983, including four "secret ones."
  • 45 teams raised $67,000.

1982

  • The Falklands War occurred, so no Trailwalker was held.

1981

  • raised $80,000, enough for a library in a poor village in Nepal and a sizeable donation for the Spastics Association of Hong Kong.

1981 - 1985

  • "Exercise Trailwalker" expected Gurkha soldiers to finish in 24 hours, not 48.
